Wren's Daily Warmup: VALORANT Edition

by @theWrenbow

My daily VALORANT warm-up routine, developed over 2+ years with the help of a former Tier 1 VCT coach. Stretches, range drills, and Deathmatch routines for Silver+ players who are serious about improving their skills and ranking up.

Step 1: Breathing & Stretches

Before hopping into the range, I like to do a few breathing exercises and stretches. They get blood moving to your hands and get your head in the game before you queue up. If anything actually hurts, back off.

  1. Close your eyes and take deep, rapid breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth— almost like hyperventilating. (20 seconds)
  2. Blink your eyes rapidly, about 3–4 times a second. (20 seconds)
  3. Clasp your hands tightly 10-or-so inches in front of your face and roll your wrists around in every direction. (15 seconds)
  4. Keeping your knuckles straight, curl your fingers down until the tips touch the top of your palm, then push them a little further with your other hand and hold. (20 seconds each hand, dominant hand first)
  5. Stick your dominant arm straight out in front of you, make a fist, and nod it up and down at the wrist like the ASL sign for "yes." (10 seconds)
  6. Keeping your arm extended, open your hand and bend it down so your fingers point at the floor, and gently pull the back of your hand toward you with your other hand. (20 seconds)
  7. Repeat 5 & 6 with your non-dominant arm.

Step 2: Eye Tracking

This step is entirely optional, but it can greatly increase reactivity by helping to warm up your eye muscles and improve your ability to quickly detect, track, and switch between moving targets.

Hint: Play the video at regular (1x) speed; try not to move your head during the exercise, kinda like a field sobriety test.

Step 3: Aim & Movement

Boot up VALORANT and hop into the range. Complete these tasks in order.

Movement Mechanics

  1. Complete the Parkour Course once using Deadlock (or another agent without movement abilities).

*Note: If you can't complete the course yet, that's fine. Reaching the later checkpoints requires extreme mechanical precision. Just get as far as you can in about 5 minutes for now, and work up to completing it over time.

Aim Mechanics

Start in the middle of the shooting range, right in front of the control panel. Stick with one weapon throughout this part; I'd recommend a Vandal, Warden, Guardian or Sheriff.

  1. Set it to 50 bots with strafe off, and stand still. Take your time hitting your shots— fast under-flick, slower micro-adjustment onto the bot's head, confirm your target and shoot. Don't rush your shots, avoid overflicking, and try not to let your crosshair dip during those fast movements. Focus on precision and build up speed over time. Eventually, you want to reliably complete this in under 50 seconds without overflicking.
  2. Same thing, but with strafe on. Incorporate small reactive micro-adjustments to stay on the bots' heads as they strafe. Again— and I can't emphasize this enough— take your time. Precision over speed.
  3. Now switch to 100 bots, strafe on, and start strafing yourself. Keep moving throughout the entirety of the drill and only fire during deadzones. If you notice yourself planted in one spot, start strafing again.

Step 4: Deathmatch

Now for the fun part! Run three Deathmatches and only use the gun listed (no Shorty shenanigans!) In all three, keep moving and deadzone in every gunfight— make yourself as hard to hit as possible.

  1. Vandal or Warden. Practice tapping heads. If you miss, reset your crosshair and tap again instead of spraying.
  2. Phantom. Shoot in short bursts of 2–3 bullets. No spray-n-pray.
  3. Classic. Go for headshots and get as many kills as you can. 10+ is good, 20+ means you're the G.O.A.T. If you win, either you're in an Iron lobby or you're hacking.

Step 5: GET IN THERE!

You're all done! Go whup some nerd hiney in ranked and hit Radiant before I manage to escape Diamond. Your dream rank awaits.
